Solar panels, electricity, ethanol and pedal power will help transport students around the track in the 24-hour endurance trial.

Teams from 379 schools will keep their environmentally friendly vehicles on track from 1pm Saturday until 1pm Sunday.

The students of Lockwood Primary School have put their heart and soul into two new race vehicles for the event.

The students have fundraised since March to pay for vehicle construction.

Grade 6 teacher and program coordinator Sandy Crothers said the students had gone above and beyond in preparation for the challenge.

"The students have been putting in extra hours training on a Friday night after school, writing letters to sponsors and fundraising at many local events," she said.

"The school has been extremely lucky this year to have two local sponsors support them."

She said their support had enabled the purchasing and construction of two new vehicles.

"Hazeldene's Chicken Farm are one of the major sponsors and the ‘Wicked Wings’ cart is a stand out thanks to the art work from Signmob in Bendigo," Ms Crothers said.

"Todd Pickering from Gel Tek has kindly donated his time and materials to make the two canopy’s for the new HPVs.

"There has been such wonderful local sponsorship and help."

Ms Crothers said the students were excited because of what they learnt from the experience.

"They are all really keen because they get so much out of it," she said.

"Not only the fitness and planning but they learn so much about health and science.

"They also get to work hands on with the human powered vehicles.

"We find that everyone gets really excited for this event."

She said the students find self confidence while preparing for this event.

"It builds team work, self confidence, a feeling of belonging and give their learning a purpose," Ms Crothers said.

Student Tom Merrin said he was planning to enjoy the competition.

"I have a lot of fun when I go over (to Maryborough)," he said.

"It is something you don't get to do everyday."

The four-day event is set to attract an estimated 20,000 people to the town.
