Leon, who plays in The Old Buzzard Medicine Show, has been playing guitar since the 1960s.
"I can't explain (the young talent)," he said. "They have a lot more access to resources through YouTube and the internet.
"(In the '60s) we didn't have anything like that. We did it by ear, which was a good thing. We learnt it the hard way."
The award, which is in its inaugural year, is in memory of Bendigo musician, business leader and youth campaigner Phil Lazenby.
The final will be held on Saturday at 2.30pm in the Civic Gardens where Bendigo's Sean Nudl, Heathcote's Murray Colbert and Melburnian Eva Kourtes will compete for the prize.
Nudl has been playing for four and half years after seeing his friend play.
"There's a lot of practice involved but improvising (blues riffs) is something I've always done. It's more fun that way."
Muddy Waters, Led Zepplin and Rolling Stones are just a few of many guitar-based performers that both Nudl and Leon have in common.
