Perfect spring weather and a hectic 10 race program are expected to lure more than 10,000 people trackside for the running of this year’s $250,000 Jayco Bendigo Cup.
The forecast is for sunny weather, with a maximum of 24 degrees ahead of the day’s feature race at 4pm.
Preparations have gone smoothly this week, with the racecourse and surrounds in impeccable condition.
Bendigo Jockey Club course manager Bernard Hopkins said despite a recent heavy workload the track was in good shape for the day’s 10 races.
He said the course would be rated a Dead 4 with a current penetrometer reading of 5.24.
“We’ve had 49 millimetres of irrigation during the week and we got two mils of rain the other day which was a nice help,” Mr Hopkins said.
“It’s got a good turf cover, so it should be in great condition (Wednesday).
“The course has recovered well from our last few meetings – there’s certainly plenty of give in the track.”
Like many Bendigonians, Mr Hopkins is hoping trainer Danny Curran can land a local cup win with his in-form galloper Caves.
But he expects the combination of owner Lloyd Williams and trainer Robert Hickmott to be hard to topple with their former Irish galloper Massiyn.
Meanwhile, police will be out in force ensuring racegoers are on their best behaviour.
Acting Sergeant Peter Dyer said uniformed officers would concentrate on the racecourse while members of the highway patrol would have the roads covered.
"We will be everywhere," Acting Sergeant Dyer said.
"If you are going to the races in a motor vehicle the chances will be very high you will be breath-tested.
"There are other plenty of other options to get to to the races.
"My advice is if you even have to think about the (blood -alcohol) limit, you shouldn't be driving."
