The Diamonds’ goal shooter couldn’t have been more proud and excited after playing in front of her adoring home fans.
“To have so many friends and family in the crowd was so good,’’ Thwaites said.
“The whole crowd was just amazing. It was a great day.
“It was awesome to get back to the old Golden City courts.
“I think parts of my knees are probably still out on the asphalt courts.
“I never thought we’d ever get to play a Test match in Bendigo, so a huge thanks to the council and everyone that played a part in getting this game to Bendigo.”
Thwaites and fellow Bendigo product, Bec Bulley, played the final quarter of the Diamonds’ impressive 55-37 win over England.
Thwaites received a huge cheer when she connected on her first attempt at goal early in the last term.
Bulley, who replaced Julie Corletto at goal defence, also earned high praise from the parochial crowd for her deflections and rebounding.
Thwaites finished with eight goals from 10 attempts.
Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander said Thwaites’ and Bulley’s introduction to the game had nothing to do with Bendigo being their home town.
“I didn’t put the Bendigo girls on the court on purpose,’’ Alexander said.
“I don’t make decisions like that. I make decisions that are strategic that are designed to give the Diamonds the best chance of winning.
“It just so happens that it was Bec Bulley and Caitlin Thwaites. They deserved their opportunity, they’ve been training really well and I thought they did a really good job.”
