15th wedding anniversary
PAMELA Blank and Des Tatt were married on October 2, 1999, in a nursing home chapel in Lismore, New South Wales.
“My mother was in the home and I didn’t want to get married without her so we were married in the chapel there,” Pamela explains.
It was the second marriage for both.
Lismore is Pamela’s home town. They met through friends, in Brisbane, where Pamela was working in the office of a wine and spirit merchant while Des, originally from Maldon, was on holiday from South Australia.
“Des has been all over the place,” Pamela says by way of explanation.
Des has done a little bit of gold prospecting around Maldon and both have tried their hand at opal mining at White Cliffs, halfway between Broken Hill and Cobar. “It was the first opal field discovered in Australia,” Pamela adds.
Before moving to Bendigo a few years ago, the couple lived in Broken Hill.
But with family scattered around the country, Broken Hill was becoming “a bit too remote” for this well-travelled pair.
And soon they’ll be moving to Brisbane... for the second time.
“We’ve been around,” Pamela agrees. “But the winters here are too cold and we want to be near our grandchildren.
“We lived in Brisbane for many years before moving to Broken Hill, so know what to expect weather-wise.”
Between them Pamela and Des have five children, 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
“We do virtually everything together,” Pamela says. “We’ve done a caravan trip halfway around Australia. We went down the east coast and then through Bendigo and across to Port Wakefield in South Australia. Then we went up through Woomera to Alice Springs, across to Longreach and wended our way down through Queensland to home.”
Des supports Pamela with an online business, knit4charity, which occupies a fair amount of her time. “We also like to go out for dinner and go to different eateries each month. We read, we go to the library. We just like to hang out together.”
The couple celebrated their 15th anniversary with a meal at the Axedale Tavern.
