Deirdre Meredith, Private Moffat's niece, and husband John first travelled to France in 2002 to learn more about her ancestor.
Following their return to Australia, they continued to research Private Moffat's life, and discovered a small brass plate - one of Private Moffat's personal possessions.
Mrs Meredith eventually wrote to the minister for veterans' affairs to request that the brass plate be returned to the family.
