Early on Saturday morning, dozens of the local Karen community arrived at Neighbourhood House to help shift boxes, appliances and all other items onto a removals van.

The house, which provides programs and support groups to those in need, is moving from its current location on Neale Street in Kennington to new premises at 155 Crook Street, Strathdale.

Community member Tha Wah said Neighbourhood House had provided strong support to newly arrived families.

"They've supported the Karen community a lot so we wanted to help them too," he said.

"If you needed help filling out a form, you would come here for help. They would help us if we needed help doing a community grant."

Up to 275 people use the service each week, including families using the playground, those looking for crucial computer skills and various support groups.

The house was moving after being at Neale Street for 15 years. The Anglican Diocese had decided to sell the house.

Neighbourhood House co-ordinator Angelique Whitehouse said they were overwhelmed with the support from the Karen community, as well as other people who had benefited from the house.

"They took the opportunity to give back us," she said.

"We try to be like your neighbours to make sure people are never isolated."

Once the heavy lifting had been completed, everyone settled in for a morning barbecue.

Ms Whitehead said the next step would be to become established at the Crook Street site.

"We encourage people to drop in if they're ever feeling isolated," she said.

"We provide advocacy, so if anyone needs advice in paying their bills or finding food, we can refer them on.

"Neighbourhood House wants to keep that current community that we've been able to establish."
