The state opposition has touted the idea, with leader Daniel Andrews saying it would be great for families, footy fans and tourism.
It is not the first time the opposition has come out in support of a September public holiday.
The latest call comes ahead of Saturday’s much-anticipated grand final clash between Hawthorn and Sydney at the MCG.
Mr Andrews believes with no long weekend on the working calendar from the Queen’s Birthday in June to Christmas, the grand final-themed holiday would fill a void.
It would be Bendigo and other regional residents who could benefit most, according to the Labor leader.
“Bendigo residents in recent years have celebrated on Friday holding business lunches, grand final barbecues and fill clubs and pubs around the region on this exciting day,” he said.
"Labor’s policy to create Grand Final Friday would enable Bendigo residents to take part in the celebrations in their home town, Melbourne CBD or in other parts of regional Victoria.
“Grand Final Friday will make the most of one of our biggest events. Parents can attend the parade with their kids and take a much-needed break."
Victoria has only one public holiday between June and Christmas Day in December, falling on Melbourne Cup day on the first Tuesday in November.
Mr Andrews said the proposal was as long-held policy position.
“Victorians are working harder every day – they deserve a long weekend in the middle of the six-month drought,” Mr Andrews said.
“One of the sporting capital’s biggest events deserves more than an ordinary Saturday.”
More than 30,000 visitors are expected in Melbourne for Saturday's game.
The Coalition has previously criticised the policy saying it would cost the state up to $1.6 billion in lost productivity and penalty rates.
