Bendigo is one of the main pit stops on the 'Tour de Beechworth Bakery', the brainchild of Beechworth Bakery managing director, Marty Matassoni.
All the money raised from the event - which will set off from Healesville on October 22 and also take in Ballarat, Echuca, Yarrawonga and Albury before arriving in Beechworth on October 26 - will go directly to Victoria SES units in towns along the tour.
A volunteer of six years at the Bendigo SES unit, Natalie Stanway, said participants were expected to fundraise $1000 each and all funds raised would go towards the SES.
"No money is going to Beechworth Bakery," she said.
She said Mr Matassoni had wanted to do the fundraiser ride for a number of years.
"He sees the commitment to community and wanted to do something for the SES," she said.
Ms Stanway said SES was always looking for funding.
"We get a grant each year from the City of Greater Bendigo and state government for about $30,000, but fuel costs and electricity costs come in at around $35,000 ever year, so we’re $5000 behind before we can even get a rescue truck on the road," she said.
"So we are grateful for any opportunity to fundraise and to raise awareness of this."
About 40 people have signed up so far for the overall full 655km tour, with others signing up to shorter legs.
Ms Stanway, who will not be riding herself but will be involved in support truck on the day, said four Bendigo SES unit volunteers would take part in the Ballarat to Bendigo leg and two would cycle the Bendigo to Echuca leg.
She said Bendigo Stadium had offered to host a fundraising dinner at its Sky Lounge on the night of October 23, when the tour stopped in Bendigo.
The dinner will be open to the community and cyclists on the tour, with a capacity for about 120 people.
