Work on the $3.8 million redevelopment of Mitchell Street is complete.
The project, which began in September 2013, has seen Mitchell Street and the Bendigo central business district undergo almost a complete reconstruction between Pall Mall and Queen Street.
A City Of Greater Bendigo spokesperson yesterday said the year-long project was nearing its end, with final line markings expected to be complete last night.
Announcing the near end of the works last Thursday, City of Greater Bendigo mayor Cr Barry Lyons said the project had been a major undertaking.
"The road pavement has been completely re-built, new underground drainage and services installed and footpaths widened, paved and reconstructed," he said.
"We have also created a new park area on the corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves Street and planted new trees and turf.
"I think members of the public will be very surprised at the improvements... particularly the introduction of the new pocket park on the east corner of Hargreaves Street and the wider footpaths."
Cr Lyons thanked nearby traders for their patience during the works.
Pedestrian Jason Hay, a Melburnian visiting Bendigo, said he was last in town nine years ago.
When quizzed about the new-look street, Mr Hay said he noticed the improvements.
"The asphalt looks good, it’s a nice clean, professional appearance," he said.
"With my suitcase it was smooth to walk from Bendigo station to Bath Lane.
"It’s brightened up the road."
