SANDHURST ruckman Tim Martin polled a record 34 votes on Sunday to win back-to-back Bendigo Football League Michelsen medals.
Martin was a runaway winner of the Michelsen, finishing 13 votes clear of his nearest rivals - former AFL pair Stephen Milne and Corey Jones on 21.
Martin’s 34 votes surpassed the previous Michelsen record of 33, which had been set by Golden Square ruckman Tony Southcombe in 1972.
“It’s a bit of a surprise... 34 votes is the most anyone has got, but I’m sure there’s blokes who have had better BFL seasons than me over the past 60 years,” Martin said.
Martin, 25, polled votes in 13 of his 18 games.
Included in his season was a stretch of nine-straight games between rounds three and 11 where he polled in every match.
Martin’s tally of 34 votes - 11 more than the 23 he won it with last year - included nine best on grounds.
He’s the first back-to-back winner of the Michelsen Medal since Golden Square’s Greg Williams in 1982-83.
While Martin was the toast of the BFL on Sunday, his place in Sandhurst’s grand final side to take on Strathfieldsaye this Saturday is under serious threat after he dislocated his ankle in Saturday night’s five-point preliminary final win over Gisborne.
