RELATED: Stark figures reveal pain of poverty
WITH the extent of Bendigo's poverty problem being made apparent in recent weeks, some people are doing the heavy lifting - quite literally - to tackle the problem.
Bendigo Foodshare volunteers organise, stack and transport food to people in need.
Most days, they are on sight from 7.30am until 12pm, picking up food from Woolworths, Coles and local cafes and delivering it to emergency relief organisations, including the Salvation Army and many local schools.
Ian Johnson has been volunteering for 12 months, and has loved every minute of it.
"It's good fun," Mr Johnson said.
"They're a good bunch of guys."
Ken Man said he liked knowing the services provided by Foodshare were making a vital difference to people's lives.
"The poverty around the place is staggering," he said.
"It's great we're making use of this food that would otherwise go to waste."
