That is despite a notice posted on social media alerting people that Greens Lake Recreational Reserve would be closed to campers from December 29 to January 1.
A spokesperson for Murray Goulburn, which owns and manages the reserve, said she did not know the origins of the Facebook page, but was adamant no decision had been made.
She said the company was due to meet with stakeholders, including local police and Corop residents, to discuss a possible lock-out at Greens Lake after several incidents of unruly behaviour last New Year's Eve.
It was hoped a resolution would be forthcoming.
Police and holiday-makers expressed concern with several incidents at Greens Lake earlier this year, with some visitors vowing to think twice about returning.
Campers left garbage, empty bottles and even a couch at the camp site, while police attended after a Rochester teenager was glassed by another boy.
There were also several reports of under-age drinking and foul language.
A man was also charged with assaulting police and driving while unlicensed at the lake in the lead-up to New Year's Eve.
Concern over the number of young people going to the lake to drink alcohol prompted police to consider closing the camp site this year.
A day after camping with her family at Greens Lake, a Bendigo woman told the Advertiser she was disgusted with the state it was left.
Renee Lomas described the atmopshere as "feral".
"There were groups of people who came throughout the day on New Year's Eve - they weren't bad until they had a few drinks," she said.
"They started getting rowdy and the language was not acceptable, they were playing loud music and as the night went on the group got bigger.
"There were 15 year-olds walking around with Cruisers and alcohol."
The closure notice was posted on the Rochester Community Page on Facebook last Friday.
It advises police and ambulance attended the reserve for serious assaults followed by a number of false calls.

"It became evident that there was a problem with the influx of revellers who attended the lake purely to cause trouble and play up," it said.
"As there is the potential for a serious situation occurring where by there could be a loss of life or property, a meeting between Goulburn-Murray Water representatives and police resolved to close the lake over the aforementioned dates."
Meetings with local stakeholders have been ongoing.
