While Martin and Sandhurst both enjoyed consistent Bendigo Football League seasons, it was early in the year when they were at their most dominant.
Martin has won the 2014 Bendigo Advertiser-ParcelPass BFL Player of the Year Award, polling 32 votes.
Of those 32 votes, Martin polled 20 of them in the opening eight games, which was also a period when his Dragons won their eight matches by an average of 73 points.
“The season started off with a bang. I was in really good form early, and I don’t think I’ve been in bad form since, just not as good as the start of the year, which is probably a bit similar to the team,” Martin said.
“Later in the season the opposition probably hasn’t been kicking it to me as much. Earlier in the season I sat a kick behind the play and took a lot of intercept marks, but now the opposition doesn’t seem to be kicking it long when they see me sitting back there.
“And it’s also hard to stay focused for a whole season.”
The award was voted on 5-4-3-2-1 by the Bendigo Advertiser after each senior game.
For winning, Martin - also the reigning Michelsen medallist - receives $500, which he has already been put on notice from his team-mates of where that money is going to.
“The boys have already said it’s going straight to the footy trip fund,” Martin said.
“They reckon I wouldn’t have got any votes without them, so they’ve claimed it.”
Martin polled votes in nine games, which included three best on grounds against Kyneton (round two), Maryborough (five) and Golden Square (eight).
