Acting Sergeant Grant Thompson said two fans engaged in "a bit of push and shove" during the final quarter of the elimination final at the Queen Elizabeth Oval.
Venue security was called over to break up the two fans, while other patrons also engaged to break up the incident.
Acting Sergeant Thompson said it was fiercely contested match and a bit of banter between fans was expected, but reminded patrons to keep track of their drinking and to act responsibly.
"There were just a few people who got a bit overexcited, the clubs are big rivals," he said.
"Patrons are usually fairly responsible and we haven't had any incidents of note so far in the finals."
No charges were laid after the incident.
Acting Sergeant Thompson said end of season footy trips to Bendigo were usually the main focus for police in the finals period, where visitors may be unaware of the city's venue lockout laws.
