The Red Ribbon Rebellion took place in 1853 and involved most of the population of Bendigo - about 10,000 people - descending on the streets to protest against a 30-shilling mining license fee.
Actors dressed in costumes for the occasion to reenact the peaceful protest.
Bendigo Advertiser photographer Jim Aldersey had his debut acting on the day, playing the role of Commissioner Joseph Panton.
Mr Aldersey said he was chosen for the role due to his height and youth, as Commissioner Panton was just 21 years old at the time of the rebellion and was more than 200 centimetres tall.
Mr Aldersey said he was nervous beforehand but managed to remember his two lines and deliver them without any hitches.
"It was great," Mr Aldersey said.
"I had a lot of fun."
