The Karen community is determined to create a place for harmony and reflection for all.
The move continues the great multi-cultural direction our city is taking.
Bendigo's Karen community includes about 400 members of Christian faith and a further 100 Buddhist.
Their journey in Bendigo is such an incredible story, building from just seven members in 2007.
They have a proud place in our community and this monastery will provide them with a rightful home.
Importantly, the Karen community's plan for this monastery is reflective of their history with an important element of the project being a place for refugees to stay while they search for permanent accommodation in the city.
The future of this monastery now sits in the hands of the City of Greater Bendigo's planning department and ultimately, hopefully, our elected councillors.
The Karen community has clearly put their faith in our city.
Let's hope this community responds in good faith.
