Lawson achieved a time of 54.83 seconds in the fifth and final heat.
She will race from lane one in the first of three semi-finals on Friday.
The Kyabram-based sprinter is coached by Bendigo's Peter Barrett and is Athletics Bendigo's reigning Athlete of the Year.
Fastest in the women's 400m heats on the Oregon track were Kendall Baisden from the United States in 53.38, Cuba's Gilda Casanova in 54.34, and Yana Glotova from Russia in 53.61.
