LATEST: Police are investigating the cause of a fatal crash on the Northern Highway this morning.

A 33-year old man from Cranbourne North died when his car ran off the road and hit a tree about 6.30 at Myola, north-east of Bendigo.

Leading Senior Constable Niall King of Bendigo Highway patrol said ambulance officers attended but the man was deceased when they arrived.

He said the man was travelling north when he ran off the right-hand side of the road.

"He's travelled on gravel for about 100 metres and corrected left, crossing the road again and hitting a tree," Leading Senior Constable King said.

"It was dark, foggy and wet on the road.

"We a wonder if fatigue could have been a factor."

Leading Senior Constable King said there was no evidence of kangaroos and no skid marks on the road.

The man was the Mercedes sedan's only occupant and it is not known where he was travelling.

The Northern Highway was closed between Toolleen-Axedale Road and Bendigo-Murchison Road for several hours.

SES and CFA crews also attended.

Leading Senior Constable King reminded people to drive to conditions and to rest when tired.

Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal car crash at Springhurst, near Wangaratta, Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators believe that the car was travelling south on the Hume Freeway when it ran off the road during an ice storm and crashed into a tree.

All four occupants were taken to hospital and an 87-year-old Wangaratta woman, who was a passenger in the car, died later that evening. One of the other passengers suffered life-threatening injuries.

The provisional road toll for 2014 is 133. This time last year it was 120.
