Started in 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue (www.tortoise.com), the day falls on May 23 each year and was created to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.

Our photographer Jim Aldersey and reader Charlotte Strahan-Ferrie captured these images. If you have photographs that celebrate World Turtle Day, send them to cos@bendigoadvertiser.com.au
