THE closure of the Australian Emergency Management Institute will be an “incredible loss” to Mount Macedon, says mayor Roger Jukes.
Budget documents released Tuesday show the centre, which provides education and training in emergency management, will close.
Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said 60 people worked at the centre.
Cr Jukes said the loss would be felt throughout the community.
“The potential loss of 60 jobs in a small regional community like Mount Macedon is quite significant,” he said.
“You don’t go and find 60 new jobs easily, especially in speciality areas like these people are in.
“The jobs just aren’t there.”
According to the 2011 census, Mount Macedon has a population of about 1300.
Cr Jukes said the council would have to look at the ramifications of the closure in greater detail. The facility is expected to close mid-2015.
