Architects such as Graeme Gunn, as well as Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, developed alternative housing models decades earlier. ''Providing alternative housing models isn't new. But it's becoming more important as housing becomes less affordable,'' says James Legge, one of four directors at Six Degrees.

While many looking for an affordable home would sacrifice a large back and front garden, according to Legge, one of the hurdles to be overcome is councils' insistence on private open space with every new detached dwelling.

''This often takes the effect of a walled courtyard garden, reducing interaction with neighbours, as well as eliminating passive surveillance,'' Legge says.

Following on from the Heller Street development, Six Degrees is about to construct eight dwellings on a double block (1600 square metres) in Clyde Street, Thornbury. While there isn't a park attached to these six townhouses and two apartments, there will be a number of features drawn from Heller Street.

The front four townhouses, oriented north to the street, will enjoy semi-open terraces leading from living areas. Each one wrapped by pergolas and low fences, these ''interstitial'' spaces strengthen the connection between residents and neighbours passing by. ''This development is aimed at families with young children, or couples,'' Legge says.

As with Heller Street, the floor plans for Clyde Street include open-plan kitchen and living areas at ground level and two to three bedrooms on the first floor (one could be used as a study or play area). And like Heller Street, materials and finishes will be robust and include polished concrete floors and extensive use of timber and plywood.

At approximately 125 square metres, the sense of space comes not only from minimal partitions at ground level, but from the individual terraced areas, as well as the communal garden. With vegie patches and outdoor seating, this communal area is akin to the shared back garden.

As well as two further townhouses to the rear of the site, the Thornbury development includes two one-bedroom apartments of about 45 square metres, which are located above the car parking area.

Six Degrees was keen not only to provide an alternative housing model, but also to be respectful of the rhythm of the streetscape, predominantly detached homes with pitched roofs. ''We were also mindful of creating ample sun penetration from the north, as well as activating the street,'' Legge says.

This latest development has made Six Degrees conscious of providing comfortable homes for those preferring to live in an apartment on the edge of the city. It is currently working on 82 apartments in West Melbourne. Spread over six storeys, this development will include many features offered in their townhouse developments.

''All the apartments will have cross-ventilation and there will be no borrowed light. There will also be apartments large enough for families,'' Legge says.

''There's no reason why people can't enjoy communal open spaces and sitting outside in a townhouse or apartment.''
