You really know how to turn it on. Without sounding like a broken record, the 2014 Bendigo Easter Festival proved again why it’s such a landmark event on our local calendar.
Despite a new parade route - which caused earlier controversy - organisers have hailed this year’s festival as the “biggest and best”.
It’s easy to see why - with bumper crowds lining the streets and many visitors travelling from afar.
But it wasn’t only the main events that impressed visitors and locals alike.
The sideshows - including a relaxed blues festival at Bull Street, the Easter Book Fair, a bonsai exhibition and even a Lego extraordinaire - were what proved our city can rival Melbourne and all it has to offer.
It was these pop-up events and laneway atmosphere - not often seen in regional towns - that really caught my interest.
So while most of the attention is on the Bendigo and District RSL Easter Torchlight Procession and the annual Easter Gala Parade, it’s those smaller events that revealed an exciting future for Bendigo’s rising culture.
It was those smaller events that proved our city can rival Melbourne and all it has to offer.
