Hosted by the Victorian Rifle Association the annual five-day event is being held at the Wellsford Rifle Range.
It is the biggest and most prestigious shooting competition held each year.
It has attracted about 200 shooters from across Victoria and Australia with a small contingent of international shooters also taking aim.
The Syme Shoot competition, the lead up event to the Queen’s Prize, began on Wednesday with several central Victorian shooters proving that knowledge of the area is proving to help them in their shooting.
South Bendigo’s Jenny Davies took out the A-Grade Field Class on the opening day of competition.
While local competitors Paul Gustafsson, Neil Draffin and Adam Davies have all began well.
Victorian Rifle Association councillor Ken Reither said there had been some good performances from shooters.
“It has been very competitive,” he said.
“On the first day we had 17 shooters have a perfect score of 150 out of 150.”
Ironbark’s Geoff Grenfell is also taking part in the prestigious competition.
Grenfell won gold in the pairs event at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.
The marksman has his sights sets on competing at this year’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
The Queen’s Prize competition will begin on Saturday with the winner crowned on Sunday afternoon.
Shooters will aim to hit targets that are between 300 and 1000 yards long.
Reither said as part of the winner’s ceremony the champion will be carried off.
