Two days later, the federal government extended federal partnership payments for homelessness services but discontinued resources for capital.
At the same time, demand for homelessness services has continued to outstrip supply, meaning more people are turned away without the accommodation they need.
Instead of ignoring this need, both the Victorian and federal governments need to urgently invest new capital into expanding our country’s stock of social housing and homelessness accommodation.
At Jesuit Social Services we see the real impact this has.
Currently, 45 per cent of prisoners expect to be homeless on release, which makes it almost impossible for people to get their lives back on track, and consequently increases the likelihood they’ll re-offend.
Investing new capital to expand social housing is a real and practical way that governments can create a safer community for us all.
