Beer and Bubs is a new concept in prenatal classes, combining a trip to the local watering hole with all the tools to help navigate childbirth.
Beer and Bubs was developed by Sydney-based childbirth educator and birth attendant Lucy Perry in 2004 and is now expanding to Bendigo.
Childbirth educator Rachael McLeod, a former Bendigo resident, hosted the first Beer and Bubs session at Bendigo's National Hotel on Tuesday night.
"The session was fantastic but the turnout was so sad for the amount of effort," she said.
"We had about four guys plus my speaker.
"I wasn't going to do it for under 10 people but I'm so passionate it will work and it's worth doing so I proceeded.
"And I was glad I did because the guys get so much out of those sessions because it's more like an around the table dinner and chat.
"It's so much more intimate."
Despite the disappointing turnout Ms McLeod plans to bring more sessions to Bendigo.
"I just feel it in my bones that it will really work," she said.
"So I've got four or five other dates for the year.
"I think it's the word of mouth that will really help to build it.
"We go through basically what to say to a laboring woman and what not to say.
"We talk about how important the man's role is.
"Most of them don't realise how very important they are.
"They just think that the doctors and midwives will know what to do and they really don't need to know much.
"The reality is they know their partner better than anyone and they are her rock."

Ms McLeod said Tuesday night's session also featured a guest speaker.
"He has a four-year-old and a 10-month-old and he was fantastic," she said.
