Police arrested and charged nine people in Bendigo on Saturday night, who each received a $577 penalty notice for being drunk in a public place.
Senior Sergeant Craig Gaffee said it was almost double the amount of drunk arrests made on a usual weekend night.
"We have police patrolling the night clubs and hotel precinct and the patrons are normally well behaved, but on Saturday we had a larger number than normal," he said.
"I have no idea why this occurred but suffice to say, if people do muck up, and spoil people having a good time, we will take steps remove them from the streets."
The people charged ranged from 18 years old to 38 years old.
Senior Sergeant Gaffee said it did not appear that there was an increase in assaults or violent behaviour.
He said all nine people spent the night in Bendigo Police cells and were released the following day.
