No one was hurt in the incident around 11.45 am on Sunday on the Bendigo Creek side of the lake.
Witnesses said it was "scary", especially in light of last year's tragedy.
Lee Coghlan, who was just meters away, said it was loud.
"We heard this big crack and there was a massive split in the tree," he said.
"It is scary especially after what happened last year."
Amy Van Heumen said it could have been dangerous.
"There were people walking on the footpath and it could have hit them."
City of Greater Bendigo mayor Barry Lyons said he was unaware of the incident but would look into it on Monday.
