Three charged over Glenalbyn double fatality get bail

UPDATE 12.15PM: A MAN was driving at high speed on the wrong side of the road moments before a crash that claimed the lives of two brothers in Glenalbyn, court documents show.

Wedderburn man Shayne Sargent, 41, has been charged with culpable driving and manslaughter over the deaths of Gary Whearem and Fred Whearem in a crash on January 4.

Police allege Sargent was speeding toward oncoming traffic and driving in a reckless manner that put people in danger of death.

Emergency services discovered the Whearem brothers dead at the scene after their car smashed into trees on the Calder Highway, Glenalbyn, 60km northwest of Bendigo.

Sargent was charged on Friday but released on bail after a brief filing hearing in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court.

Prosecuting, Sergeant David Somerton said Sargent was travelling in a third vehicle, which was "involved in causing the double fatality".

The court heard two co-accused appeared in the Shepparton Magistrates Court Friday, facing charges of manslaughter, culpable driving and dangerous driving causing death and other offences.

The 67-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, both from Violet Town, were also released on bail.

Police charged all three people early Friday morning following an investigation into the crash.

Detectives said just prior to the crash they had received a triple-0 call with reports of erratic driving.

According to the witness there were three vehicles travelling side by side on the highway and "leapfrogging" one another.

Sargent has been bailed to his Wedderburn address under strict bail conditions and will return to court for a committal mention on April 13.
