The group of firefighters were due to catch a bus to Castlemaine to meet up with other crews but when it wasn't available they opted to take a limousine.
Maldon CFA group officer Sean McCubbin said one of the brigade members has their own limousine they were able to use.
"There were about eight in the limo that got a lift down to Castlemaine," he said.
"A couple of others went in our support vehicle."
"They met up and got the bus from Castlemaine."
The 12 volunteers from Walmer, Baringhup and Maldon brigades have travelled toward Mildura and will assist with firefighting efforts.
Mr McCubbin said they had all shown great dedication.
"They put their hand up every year, time after time," he said.
"They do an extraordinary job."
Another 50 CFA volunteers left from Bendigo to tackle bushfires in Yaapeet, near Hopetoun on Saturday.
The fire crews will return to central Victoria on Tuesday.
