Life Saving Victoria education instructors visited primary schools last week, armed with the message ‘Be Aware and Be Prepared,’ to deliver its Sink or Swim – Meet a Lifeguard Program, just in time for summer.
The free program was developed in direct response to the issue of child drowning and the need for inland water safety education.
Students are taught how to enjoy the water safely, before the peak summer season.
Life Saving Victoria community education services coordinator Melissa Laird said waterways, beaches and pools were great for cooling off on hot summer days.
“We do not want to discourage anyone from not going to any aquatic environment this summer,"
she said.
"We just want everyone to be able to do so safely, and injury free."
