Monday's play at the Bendigo Bank tennis complex in Nolan Street included Fitzgerald taking on Bendigo's Zac Lethlean in qualifying.
A closely-fought contest ended in Fitzgerald winning 7-5 6-3.
The first round of the main draw included a 6-3 6-1 victory for Fitzgerald against Maximiliam Tolstoy.
The top three seeds in the men's singles achieved straight-sets wins in round one.
The championships continue from 8.30am on Tuesday.
Tennis aces are also vying for honours in the 10, 12, 14 and 16 age groups.
Finals will be played on Wednesday.
Fitzgerald is one of the biggest names on Bendigo's courts this week.
John Fitzgerald won seven doubles titles at grand slam leve, was in the Davis Cup-winning team in 1986, and captain of Australia's Davis Cup team from 2001 to 2010.
