In the end, such loyalty counted for little as Holden chose to turn its back on this great relationship with Australia for money.
Holden cited the high Australian dollar, production costs and a small market as the reasons for cutting ties and putting close to 3000 people out of work.
The decision will have dire consequences for Australia's car manufacturing industry.
While the politicians choose to play the blame game, the thoughts of most Australians today will sit with all those who will lose their jobs because of Holden's decision.
It's a sad day all round.
