OVERNIGHT NEWS

Midnight marriages make history

As most Australians were sleeping, Alan Wright and Joel Player were celebrating history with the nation's first same-sex wedding ceremonies held at one minute past midnight in Canberra.

The threat of the High Court striking down the ACT's same-sex marriage laws next week was to have been momentarily set aside as they exchanged vows and rejoiced with friends beneath the 55 bronze bells of the National Carillon at Lake Burley Griffin at 12.01am.

PM's travel clamp sparks backlash

Cabinet ministers and top public servants will have to personally sign off on airfares and hotel bookings for tens of thousands of federal bureaucrats as Tony Abbott cracks down on travel costs.

Coalition ministers, staffers and senior public service executives have privately condemned the Prime Minister's demand as "unworkable", "ridiculous" and showing "complete ignorance of the practical realities of government".

BIRTHDAYS

If it is your birthday I hope you have a great day and get lots of pressies.

You share a birthday with former Australian politician and diplomat Amanda Vanstone, US basketball star Larry Bird and US pop singer Aaron Carter.

JOKE OF THE DAY

An elderly couple are in church. The wife leans over and whispers to her husband, "I just let out a long, silent fart. What should I do?" The husband replies, "First off, replace the batteries in your hearing aid!"

I'm sure you have a better joke so email it to hannah.knight@fairfaxmedia.com.au

Have a great weekend,

Hannah
