Mr Broelman, who creates cartoons each day for Fairfax and APN, is one of six people in line for the Gold Stanley for Cartoonist of the Year.
The 44-year-old Adelaide resident won the Gold Stanley in 2005 and 2009, and said the nomination was “a nice surprise”.
“I get a lot of personal satisfaction out of doing a cartoon that makes a point, connects with readers and is quick to create,” he said.
“I get a lot of satisfaction out of what I’m doing.
“I hope readers are enjoying the cartoons as much as I enjoy doing them.”
Mr Broelman started drawing cartoons in primary school.
“I was a really bad asthmatic,” he said.
“So sport and physical activity wasn’t possible and I spent a lot of my time drawing.
“I’ve done so many cartoons that I wouldn’t have a favourite, but I’ve certainly had a few subjects that I’ve liked drawing, like John Howard his thick eyebrows and big lip.
“When I was a kid I enjoyed drawing Bob Hawke.
“I drew pretty stupid things back then and it’s probably fitting that I’m drawing stupid things now.”
The awards, once described as "the Oscars for Australian cartooning", will be announced this weekend.
