The Bendigo Advertiser incorrectly reported that the church was no longer operating - it has two mission groups that currently use the building for worship. The Anglican Diocese wants to sell the church to allow for further redevelopment.
City of Greater Bendigo councillors this week agreed to refer the matter to the Minister for Planning Matthew Guy, who will consider an outstanding objection. Pastor Valerie Barker said the View Hill Fellowship said the mission had been operating at the church for 22 years.
She said it would find a new place to worship if the All Saints' Anglican Church was sold to a developer.
"A church is more than a building and we have been able to worship here rent-free for years so we are very appreciative," she said.
The property, at the corner of Forest and Mackenzie streets, has buildings that are 140 years old.
The history of the All Saints' Church is extensive. The first service was a tent service, and parts of the current church building, including the end wall, was only meant to be temporary but has lasted for over 100 years. The site was also a meeting place for the Red Ribbon Rebellion.
