The state and federal Liberal parties promised $41 million and $45 million respectively to the project yesterday morning.
Labor later promised to match the $45 million if elected, which means the road will be upgraded despite the outcome of next month’s election.
The funding was welcomed by emergency service workers and the City of Greater Bendigo.
Victorian Premier Denis Napthine said the intersection was “arguably the most dangerous intersection anywhere in Victoria”.
He said the $86 million project “will make this intersection safe once and for all”.
“Tragically this has been the site of numerous crashes including fatalities,” Dr Napthine said. “And indeed in the last five years there have been seven serious crashes at this intersection including one fatality and many serious injuries.
“It is an extremely dangerous intersection.
“There is no doubt this is a life-saving, productivity boosting project.”
Dr Napthine said the state funding would still be available if the ALP won the election.
“We’re willing to work with whoever is elected,” he said.
Member for Northern Victoria Damian Drum said VicRoads design works would start immediately, with the project to be completed within four years.
Mr Drum said a parcel of land on the east side of the highway would have to be acquired.
Rough design documents show a bridge will run from the Calder Alternative over the top of the intersection to separate traffic entering the Calder.
