Ken Scott and his son were asleep in their Kangaroo Flat home yesterday morning when a valve on a gas meter ruptured.
The house started to fill with gas, and the one-year-old long-haired ginger cat alerted his owner by meowing.
“I came out and heard him mewling,” Mr Scott said. “I thought it was unlike him to be mewling and heard the gas coming out under quite a lot of pressure.
“He warned us about the leak.
“He’s a really smart cat. I turned the gas off at the meter and immediately rang the gas company.” Mr Scott said Garfield had been rescued from an abusive home and adopted by the family.
“My daughter actually found him,” he said.
“People had been maltreating him. She took him to the vet, and the vet asked if we wanted to keep him.
“He’s very affectionate.
Mr Scott said the gas filled his kitchen, dining room and hallway, and put him and his son at risk.
“There was a fair amount in the house,” he said. “When I rang up the gas people and told them, they told me to immediately open the back door and all the windows.
“Me and my younger son were told to hop outside the house.
“I couldn’t believe our luck.”
