Ross Streeter, 30, from Bendigo, appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday via videolink from the Melbourne Assessment Prison.

Defence lawyer Paul Galbally said Mr Streeter would be pleading not guilty to the two murder charges.

Magistrate Simon Garnett remanded Mr Streeter to appear in the Supreme Court on July 17 for a directions hearing.

Mr Streeter is accused of shooting dead his father Douglas and uncle John at the family's 1600ha Natte Yallock sheep farm, near Avoca, 200 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, on March 14.

Police told an earlier court hearing that Mr Streeter allegedly shot his uncle first before leaving the farm and then returning a short time later to shoot his father.

Police claimed they had a witness who was with the accused around the time of the murders.

The court heard there were a number of people involved with the family's complex financial arrangements, which police needed to examine.

Mr Streeter had made no comment to police about the killings. When he first appeared in court after his arrest, Mr Streeter had his left arm bandaged from what police claimed were self-inflicted injuries.

He was charged after being questioned following his release from the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he had been taken after being found at a house in Avoca.

The bodies of John and Douglas Streeter, both aged in their 60s, were discovered at the farm by a family member on March 14.

The brothers were farewelled at a memorial service at the Uniting Church in Avoca at 2pm on March 23, before a private family burial later in the day.

In death notices published in a local Ballarat newspaper, Douglas' wife, Helen, wrote: "We have had over 42 years of sharing and caring and working together. You will be forever loved with a love beyond telling, forever missed with a grief beyond tears.''

Douglas' eldest son, Anthony, wrote: "You are an inspiration to us, you will never know how much we relied on your advice and guidance in life.

"No words can ever describe the love and respect we have for you. This will never change, and we will always look after Mum.

"For the rest of our lives, there is one thought that will keep us going and it is this: Doug Streeter was my father. Gone and not forgotten.''
