While the band often plays stadium shows and has opened for acts like AC/DC, the four-piece entertained 230 local fans in a last-minute gig.
Golden Vine co-owner Liz Wright said the venue had quickly filled to capacity, with extra staff hired to cater for the crowd. A further 150 people had lined up for entry along King Street.
“It’s probably the best thing that’s hit the Vine for a very, very long time,” she said. “I can assure you it was absolutely fabulous.
“They played for about an hour-and-a-half and the whole night was very full-on.
“The whole place was pumped from start to finish.”
The band, whose full title is Andrew Stockdale and the Wolfmother Band, were only confirmed to play the gig on Thursday night.
Ms Wright said the intention was to “really put live music on the map in Bendigo”. “The Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival is a big thing now and attracts big bands,” she said.
“We felt it was really important to continue that encouragement of large bands in Bendigo.”
Ms Wright and partner Mark Elliott first sought the permission of The John Grossman Project, who had been scheduled to play, before accepting the invite to host Wolfmother.
The John Grossman Project joined Magna Mouse on the bill.
“Every band that played was great,” Ms Wright said. “Everyone that was there last night was so excited to have Wolfmother play.
“I think it was a pretty big thing for Bendigo.”
