Ashley Hay looks genuinely surprised when it is pointed out that her two novels have something striking in common. In her first, The Body in the Clouds, a man plunges from the incomplete Sydney Harbour Bridge into the water below. In the second, The Railwayman's Wife, a man is crushed to death in a shunting accident. That both are victims of misadventure associated with industry can surely not be ascribed to mere coincidence?
