The 22-year-old Charlton resident placed a butterfly on the memorial wall in honour of Jeremy Lane, who lost his life to suicide.
“I went from kinder to year 12 with him and he committed suicide two days before Christmas last year,” Ms Mccallum said.
“He was always the one who looked after me because I was the one who was going through this stuff and I never would have expected him to be the one who followed through with it.
“He was always so happy and easy going and lucky.
“I was the one who was getting bullied and stuff.
“It was a shock to the system.
“I would never have picked it – I would have thought it anyone it would have been me.”
Ms Mccallum said Bendigo’s SPAN walk was an important event and helped break down some of the barriers surrounding suicide.
“It helps because more people talk about it and it’s about just getting it out in the open,” she said.
