Household water usage and electricity consumption has decreased in the past five years in Bendigo, despite nearly 10,000 more people calling the city home.

A report by Regional Cities Victoria shows current annual water consumption is estimated at 6.1 million litres, compared to 6.2 million in 2008.
Annual household electricity consumption is now estimated to be 0.25 billion kilowatts down from 0.26 billion five years ago.
The figures come despite Bendigo’s population surging in that time from 96,740 people to 105,560.
Bendigo Sustainability Group president David Brownhill said the figures reflected a growing awareness of consumption levels within the community.
“The general public have become more water wise and they plant gardens which are a lot more drought friendly,” he said. “People are also capturing rain water as well through tanks,” he said.
He said the increase in solar system installations was also reflected in the report.
He said the amount of information available on energy efficient appliances helped people make better choices.
Mr Brownhill said he was pleased Bendigo was decreasing the amount of energy and water it used.
“It’s great to see that people are thinking about their consumption... not only is it helping the planet, but ultimately it’s helping their wallets as well."
