Over 1000 blocks of Woolworths Select chocolate bars were strategically placed in a design to say “Happy Easter” at the front of the Kangaroo Flat supermarket to officially take the title of the “World’s Largest Chocolate Bar Mosaic”.
The 21.62 square metre mosaic easily exceeded the former record of 18.35 square metres set in Switzerland in 2011.
Store manager Ben Dillon said it took six staff seven hours to build on Thursday night.
“It went up much quicker than we thought it would but we were sick of the colours by the end,” he said.
Mr Dillon wanted to break a world record to promote the supermarket’s Easter Fresh Fair today.
Fresh food samples will be held at the store between 9am and 6pm, plus free kids activities between 10am and 2pm. “I was looking through the (Guinness World Records) book and thought this is one we can do,” he said. “I wanted something big and bold for the smallest Safeway in Bendigo.”
Local consultant surveyors Tomkinson Group’s Kevin Thiele and Josh Ivins were on hand with a steel measuring tape to verify the size of the mosaic in a first for the pair. “This is the first time I’ve ever measured chocolate,” Mr Thiele said.
Mr Dillon said he was thrilled Lansell Plaza Safeway had become a Guinness World Record holder.
“I’m very proud of my team and what we have pulled together in a short amount of time,” he said.
