Victoria Police bomb squad members have safely detonated what is believed to be a home-made explosive device.

The special operations bomb squad were called to an address in Egans Road, near Shirley Court, at Huntly after the suspicious item was found earlier today.

An officer at the scene said it was unclear what the item was. A robot detonator was sent in to retrieve the device.

It was blown up by the bomb squad in a backyard in Egans Road about 3.15pm.

A Victoria Police spokesman said there had been no evacuations and the focus of the police attention posed no danger to the public.

Officers in bomb suits are still at the scene.

The CFA have assisted in hosing down the area.
