Long-running program draws more girls to golf

THE youngsters who drove, chipped and putted in the Women’s Golf Bendigo junior program were at the Neangar Park course for last week’s season wind-up and Christmas party.

Extreme heat meant the girls did not tee off in the district nine-hole championships on the Averys Road layout.

The nine-hole titles will be played early next year.

Barbecue tea was enjoyed by Bendigo district representatives Nenagar Park women’s committee, Neangar Park golf pro family and friends.

The meal was followed by the presentation of the yearly awards.

Most attendance at the Thursday’s clinics was jointly awarded to Tahlia Holmberg, Tia and Caitlyn Mitchell.

None of these girls missed a lesson.

Most improved award went to Robyn Pilcher and Amber  Holmberg.

Most reduction of handicap mark over 12 months was achieved by Kristi Bilkey from 14.4 to 10.4.

Encouragement awards were presented to Jazy Roberts, Sienna Day, Morgan Dunn and Amy Bilkey.

The WGBD junior golf clinics are held every Thursday after school from 4pm to 5.30pm.

The girls learn all aspects of the game of golf, play the course, and have monthly lessons from Neangar Park professional Eric Hendrix, who is a PSF AAA Professional coach.

Sponsorship from the Victorian Golf Federation means the clinics are free.

The linics are run by Jan Conder and Yvonne Boyd, who both have single figure handicaps and have achieved many titles.

The program has been running for 19 years, with as many as 300 girls taught by Conder and Boyd.

A highlight of the year was the Kay Mahlook Shield event in late November at Kyneton Golf Club.

Golfers from Bendigo, Goulburn Valley, North Eastern and Western teed off in the teams matchplay.

Bendigo’s  Tahlia Holmberg, Kristi Bilkey, Zara White and Cassie Wicks finished third.

“We have some very talented junior girls, who I honestly believe will go very far in their golfing careers,” said Conder.
