City of Greater Bendigo councillors last night endorsed yet another vision for the Hargreaves Mall.
The new plan sets about activating the space with screens, activities, colour and plants.
Shades, better seating and community events are among the other possibilities for the mall.
Many will groan at the thought of “yet another council plan” for the public space.
The council is the first to admit there have been, and remain, problems with the mall.
Councillors described the infamous strip and its redevelopments to date as an ongoing “saga”.
But the time has come for all parties to take charge, traders particularly.
If everybody comes to the table and helps out, the end result will be a winner for the community.
It is not just the traders’ mall, it’s for everyone.
The days of sitting back and criticising but failing to help must end.
Council community wellbeing director Pauline Gordon has inherited the mall and the issues it brings. She has made it clear that revitalising the space and enhancing its reputation are among her top priorities.
Given the thorough report she presented to the council last night, it is clear she is a woman of action.
Let’s hope her guidance can see this project come to a successful conclusion – the community is definitely ready for an end to this saga reporter.
