BENDIGO will host some of the state’s brightest soccer stars in an Anzac Day blockbuster this Saturday. The Football Federation Victoria premier league clash between Green Gully and Heidelberg United is tipped to draw a strong crowd to Tom Flood Sports Centre. The latest initiative by regional soccer advocates Green Gully may become an annual event. The Cavaliers also organised a match last year, but that fixture was abandoned because of torrential rainfall.Green Gully secretary Raymond Mamo said the City of Greater Bendigo, the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League and FFV had all helped in the planning of the match.”We’ve been working very closely with the right people for some time now in trying to promote the game up in regional Victoria,’’ Mamo said.“We’ve had a very good relationship with Bendigo in the past and every time we go up there we get looked after and we are looking forward to doing it again.“Our club has committed a great deal of time and also financially in exposing the game in regional Victoria.“We are trying very hard to ensure that football followers in regional Victoria are part of our game.“And to have this fixture with Heidelberg United on Anzac Day is a tremendous result and one we hope is a successful one.’’Both sides will be hell-bent on claiming their first victory of the season.Green Gully fought back from a goal down against South Melbourne last weekend and looked set to be heading for a 2-1 win until substitute Gianni De Nittis scored a 93-minute equaliser.Heidelberg United lost its round one match against the Melbourne Knights 1-0.Bendigo Amateur Soccer League general manager Doug Colclough said the significance of Anzac Day and the fixture itself ensured the match would capture the imagination of the central Victorian football fraternity.“We look like we’re going to have a great attendance there which is fantastic,’’ Colclough said.“I think the scheduling of it is perfect being on Anzac Day and its the only match down here on the day, and the fact that this is not just a regional friendly just adds to it.“It’s for championship points between two of the power clubs of the premier league, so we’re expecting the public to get behind it.“We like to think Bendigo is a fruitful breeding ground for the premier league.’’FFV chief executive officer Mark Rendell said exposing regional areas to quality soccer was a priority of the organisation.“It’s a significant occasion being on Anzac Day and a great way to commemorate the Anzacs,’’ Rendell said.“We also think its important to expose regional areas to top flight football.“Green Gully has put in a lot of work making sure this is a success and we think it will be.’’The match kicks off at 4pm on Anzac Day at the Tom Flood Sports Centre. The day’s action kicks off at 1.45pm with the BASL division one clash between Golden City and Strathdale.A touring men’s team from China will play an FFV Select 11 from 6.30pm on Saturday at the Tom Flood Sports Centre. The Bendigo Amateur Soccer League 2009 season will also kick-off this weekend.Swan Hill will be hoping for a better start to its season, after being thumped 14-0 in the opening fixture last year.Their opponents this round are again Eaglehawk. The first round of matches on Sunday are: Moama Border Raiders v Epsom; Swan Hill v Eaglehawk; Colts United v Kyneton District; Spring Gully United v Castlemaine.
