STRATHFIELDSAYE’s senior netball coach Jody Warfe is confident the Storm can win their first A-grade final in the club’s history this weekend. The Storm, who finished in fifth place ahead of reigning premiers Kangaroo Flat, will take on Eaglehawk in Saturday’s elimination final at the QEO.Warfe, who has been with the Storm since the club’s inaugural season in 2009, said Eaglehawk should be concerned about how far the Storm have come in 2011.“Eaglehawk absolutely should be worried because they haven’t gotten any better since the start of the season and we have,” Warfe said.“We’ve got a completely different line-up to them and they have not played us with this line-up on court.“I know that all games are winnable – especially in finals,” she said in the build-up to September. After a shaky start to the season, Strathfieldsaye won seven of its past nine matches, including a must-win final round clash with Maryborough to earn the right to play in its first A-grade finals series.Warfe said the way her team secured a finals position was a credit to the ability of the Strathfieldsaye team.“On Saturday we wanted to win on our own merit. We didn’t just want to get in because Kangaroo Flat lost and that’s what we did,” she said.“That made it even better because we knew we’d worked hard to get there.“Maryborough never give in and got to within four at one stage, but the girls just stepped up a notch and it was just a really good way to finish.”A highlight of Storm’s play in the second half of the season is the defensive line-up, including Kristen Wilson, who has been one of the league’s standout players this season.“She is mentally and physically one of the best athletes I’ve seen at this level,” Warfe said of Wilson.Warfe declared Strath-fieldsaye’s defence was the competition’s best.“We have got the best defence end in the league and probably central Victoria,” she said.“With Wilson as a backstop it’s very hard to get the ball past her, and she and Benita (Swatton) play like they’re six foot three.“Gemma Ralli is another who has stepped up in defence, and she is just unpredictable and comes from nowhere, which makes her very hard to play against.”
