Bendigo gallops trainers Anne and Darryn Yates are expecting big things from Blue Hero, who took out Sunday’s Nursery Ridge Estate Wines Handicap (1350m) at Donald. With well-known Bendigo jockey Wayne Hokai aboard, the four-year-old led over the first 400 metres before dropping off the lead at the turn. Blue Hero then found something extra in the last 400 metres to win by less than a length from Brave As.Victory at Donald was Blue Hero’s third win from four starts.“He won in his second start at Kyneton, and then he went on to win at Seymour which was his third start,” Yates said.“His performance was not unexpected as he has always shown plenty of promise.” Yates said Blue Hero will now be rewarded with a break after his impressive performances, before he challenges again at Mooney Valley’s night racing carnival.“We’re going to give him a little break in the paddock for a while and then will probably bring him back for some night racing,” he said.“We’re going to try and win a few races at the night meetings at Mooney Valley and then take one some metropolitan races after that.”Blue Hero has a strong Bendigo following, with Andrew Jinks, Rick Dungey, John Conners, Rhys Carmichael, Heath Archer, Ross Smith, Helen Cook, Anne Yates as well as Melbourne-based Rhys Holland all part owners in the four-year-old.
